The warranty was 90 days. After 90 days you had to ship the unit plus a $35 money order to them.

The manual indicated that the Chess Challenger could be upgraded after June 1, 1977 by sending the unit back to them and a money order for US$ 75.00

Fidelity Chess Challenger 10. Model CCX.  The manual indicates that level 7 is for postal chess (by mail) and the average response time is 24 hours!

The technique works by "exploiting small, microscopic deviations in device hardware: clock skews." In practice, Kohno’s paper says, his techniques "exploit the fact that most modern TCP stacks implement the TCP timestamps option from RFC 1323 whereby, for performance purposes, each party in a TCP flow includes information about its perception of time in each outgoing packet. A fingerprinter can use the information contained within the TCP headers to estimate a device’s clock skew and thereby fingerprint a physical device. Read more at news.com

Reverse engineering of the IPOD firmware by using a modem noise attack!

 I got an iPod for christmas. The ipodlinux project was one of the main reasons for my choice and so I started exploring the iPod as far as I was able to. I patched the bootloader and got some basic code to run but there was no way to access any hardware other than the two CPUs yet. To get the LCD, Clickwheel and the harddisk working we needed to reverse engineer the bootloader in the flashrom. But to do that we first had to find a way to get that code. Seems quite impossible without any knowlegde about the IO-Hardware but I found a solution…

They have in fact use the internal tweeter of the IPOD to dump the result of code execution of the firmware into sound. These people have write a digital sound compression algorithm, an encoder and a decoder!!! Now 64kb of internal code can be examined!! why? just for booting LInux!!! penguin power!!!  read more here…

Principe :
Le principe repose sur l’utilisation d’un oscillateur, constitué par le circuit intégré 555, dont la fréquence varie de 16 KHz à 78 KHz environ, grà¢ce au potentiomètre. Les signaux de sortie sont appliqués à un sextuple inverseur, utilisant le circuit 4069, dont les portes sont montées en parallèle deux à deux, afin de fournir plus de courant. Les inverseurs attaquent ensuite, en opposition de phase, deux jeux de transistors complémentaires de puissance T2-T4 et T3-T5, à travers les transistors préamplificateurs T6 et T7.
Le piézo est monté en pont entre les sorties de cet étage, qui lui fournit une tension cràªte à cràªte, égale au double de la tension d’alimentation, prise à la sortie du redressement.
L’alimentation continue des circuits intégrés, est obtenue à partir du secteur 220 dont la tension est abaissée à 12 V par le transformateur, puis redressée par le pont de diodes D1 à D4
et filtrée par le condensateur C1. Cette tension est ensuite stabilisée à 6,2. V par le transitor T1, et filtrée à nouveau par le condensateur C3. il suffit de coller a la bi composants un haut parleur piezo sur le fond d’une boite métallique et de le connecter entre A et B. Alimenter en 220V entre les deux points 220.
Taille de la cuve : N’esperer pas avoir une cuve plus grande qu’une boite de conserve, au dela je reste sceptique (montage 4 Watts), je reste sceptique quand a coller un piezo sur une cuve métallique, esperer la résonance de la cuve et observer des zone de compressions/détente qui les accompagne…
Efficacité : oui cela marche mais pour de petits bijoux. Peut etre q’en montant la cuve sur une ponceuse électrique vibrante donnerait le màªme résultat.
Remarques : Les systèmes professionnels font plus de 400 Watts et on recommande de ne pas mettre la main dedans en fonctionnement. Il chauffe la solution, des fois a plus de 70 degrées (l’agitation moléculaire : mvt brownien augmente et peut etre par la meme la cavitation (explosion des bulles de vapeur suite a une detente brusque)), et utilisent des solvants : (trychlo), eau, solution détergente. De toute facon, je pense que le secret réside dans le transducteur (partie maitresse et breveté) car le reste n’est qu’un oscillateurs variable. Solution ? je n’en ai pas, demander si les industriels ne vendraient pas que la tàªte, ou acquérir un système d’occasion.
